In the first five previews of the 14th day of the Brasileirao, the challenges between Atletico Mineiro and Corinthians and above all between Palmeiras and Flamengo, not a city derby but nevertheless one of the great classics of the Brazilian top league, stand out.
The two clubs from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro also faced each other two years ago in the Copa Libertadores final, which saw Verdao triumph. Both now frequent the upper reaches of the standings: they are fourth and third respectively, but already lagging far behind the leading Botafogo. Palmeiras have lost further ground in recent weeks, missing the appointment with victory for three games in a row and losing the direct clash with Botafogo. In the last month, their only success came in the Libertadores (4-0 to lowly Bolivar), which allowed the green-and-whites to qualify for the knockout phase. At home, however, Abel Ferreira’s men are transformed: in front of their own public they have won 17 of their last 20 matches, always scoring many goals. Flamengo’s path is also uneven, but they seem to have turned around with the arrival of Jorge Sampaoli on the bench. Three victories in the last four days for the Mengao, thanks to which they managed to overtake even Palmeiras. The conditions are in place for a spectacular match, with at least three goals in total.
Brasileirao 2023: no Hulk for Atletico Mineiro
The other match to watch out for is the one being staged in Belo Horizonte. Hosts Atletico Mineiro are stuttering – winless in their last five matches – and are only tenth in the table. However, they will meet Corinthians, who are still in crisis.
Hulk
The Timao are eight points down and floating above the relegation zone: defensively the São Paulo club are very solid but struggle in the non-possession phase. Atletico are slight favourites, but watch out for the heavy absence of their top scorer Hulk, disqualified for double admonition. Cuiabá and Bahia, both on the right side of the table, are not going through a good period either. We expect a very tight and uneventful match, in which Cuiabá could win by a narrow margin. Cruzeiro will probably avoid defeat, as they face the dangerous Vasco da Gama, who are in the relegation zone, and the total number of goals could be less than three. The challenge against America Mineiro for bottom-of-the-table Coritiba is an opportunity to continue moving up the standings after the away success against Goiás.
