Milan and Atalanta slowed down at the weekend, losing to Inter and Sassuolo respectively. Two results that were music to the ears of Maurizio Sarri and his Lazio, who in the away match against third-last Verona have the opportunity to dig a furrow of not indifferent proportions between fourth and fifth position, overtake Roma’s cousins once again and consolidate one of the four Champions League places.
The Biancocelesti are also called upon to redeem the last two disappointing performances, not at all in line with what the Capitoline team had shown in the previous match against AC Milan, scrambled 4-0 at the Olimpico. Last Sunday Lazio took a big risk against Fiorentina, not going beyond a 1-1 draw with the Viola, and on Thursday they surrendered almost without a fight to a far from irresistible Juventus (1-0) in the Coppa Italia, halting their run to the quarter-finals. The goal-scoring spree against the Rossoneri was the only time Immobile and his teammates scored more than two goals, a clear sign that Sarri is struggling to regain the offensive continuity of the first part of the first half of the season, regardless of the presence or absence of his top scorer, who has been plagued by injuries this year. And yet, despite the fluctuating results, Lazio remain in the running for one of the season’s objectives: to return to the top four.
Verona are back to believing in salvation
Now Verona, but the Scaligeri are no longer the team that collected ten consecutive defeats in the autumn and seemed to have one foot and a half in Serie B.
The debutant Marco Zaffaroni, called in during the break to flank Salvatore Bocchetti, put some order where there was chaos before. The Gialloblù, like Napoli, are the team that has conceded the fewest goals in their first five matches in 2023. In the same time span they have won two home victories (Cremonese and Lecce), drawn in Turin and Udine and lost narrowly at the San Siro against Inter. A very respectable path that has rekindled salvation hopes. In the event of a success against Lazio, Verona would in fact go just two points behind Spezia.

Zaffaroni recovers defender Dawidowicz, back after being suspended: the Pole will complete the defensive trio with Hien and Ceccherini. Former Cologne man Duda will have space in midfield, while Lasagna and Lazovic will play behind Djuric in the back. On the two flanks we will see Depaoli and Doig, but Verdi and newcomers Braaf and Zeefuik will also play.
In Lazio, Immobile is back from the 1′, while Pedro sits on the bench ready to take over as the game progresses. In the middle Marcos Antonio could take Cataldi’s place, in defence it’s a ballot between Hysaj and new arrival Pellegrini.
The Prediction
Lazio won’t have an easy night against a Verona side revitalised by recent results. The Biancocelesti, despite being very inconsistent, should not miss out on the three points this time around, but they are likely to concede at least one goal in Verona. It is likely to be a prolific first half, considering that both teams scored a lot in the first half.
