Werder Bremen v Union Berlin, Bundesliga: odds, predictions

by Mark

Werder Bremen-Union Berlin is a Bundesliga match on matchday 17 and is played on Wednesday at 20:30: TV, line-ups, predictions.

Union Berlin were perhaps the team most in need of a breather before the World Cup break. The double league-Europa League commitment had put Urs Fischer’s men, the big surprise of the first part of the season, to the test.

The Capitolini were at the top of the table for a long time in the autumn, before suffering a physiological decline and being overtaken by Bayern Munich. Two and a half months later, however, they returned to winning ways, putting an end to a three-day fast (heavy defeats against Bayer Leverkusen and Freiburg and a draw against Augsburg). Union won 3-1 against Hoffenheim, who had taken the lead in the first half. There was a good reaction and a good attitude from Trimmel and his team-mates, resolving a match that had not been on the right track. The three points allowed Fischer and his men to keep pace with Freiburg, Eintracht Frankfurt and Leipzig, the trio of teams trying to stay in the wake of top-favourite Bayern Munich and keep the game open as long as possible.

Union who, in any case, will have to reckon with Werder Bremen’s desire for redemption, just back from a memorable blow against the far from irresistible Cologne. The green-and-white formation seemed to be the distant relative of the one they had admired in the first months of the championship, capable as a newly-promoted team of positioning themselves close to the European zone. The heavy 7-1 at the RheinEnergieStadion instead showed a dull team with little, very little desire to fight. The only one to save himself from the Rhine debacle was the goal scorer Fullkrug, author of the so-called goal of the flag.

The Prediction

Werder Bremen do not have any problems in the league table, but they come to this match with three defeats in a row and are one of the teams with the fewest points at home. We assume a reaction from Werner’s men, but Union Berlin, having put their troubles behind them, seem to be in a position to take another win after their convincing one against Hoffenheim. Both should score.
